The Scrabble section is strategically located at the upper building in the club, sharing floor with the library for members who want to busy themselves with some academic work. It is a Section most members dread to frequent, simply because they believe the game is too brain-tasking.
To some members, it is the Section for the book-worms while some prefer to call it “OLD PEOPLE’S HOME” because of the preponderant number of life members of the Club that always come around to play the game. Yet, these are men you would not regret sharing your time with.
To us in Scrabble, it is one of the liveliest Sections you can have around. It is a serene but intellectually vibrating environment where you get to learn and appreciate the etymologies (origins) of so many different languages and, by so doing, improve one’s level of vocabulary and keeps you mentally alert at all times.
To make the Section more attractive to members to frequent, we have introduced an equally brain-tasking but grammar-free fun-game of Chess. This we hope will make the Section livelier and increase the number of participating members.
Part of the efforts to popularise the game, and hence the Section, is the introduction of Coaching Clinics/Competition particularly targeted at the younger members of the Club. We hope that these young players will be the future pillars of the Section.
Finally, we wish to pay tribute to those founding fathers, like Chief Femi. Gbadebo, Chief Femi Oluwole, Otunba Dele Opanuga,Mr Wale Dada-Bello, Air Cdre Bolaji David (rtd) and a host of others who saw to the emergence of Scrabble Section and who have seen to its continued existence among the committee of Sections in the Club.
